Master-class November 2018: Advanced NVivo

An advanced master-class in qualitative data analysis for existing NVivo users currently working on a research project who seek to advance their knowledge and skills.

 

This 2 day course is being held in ACSPRI's Melbourne office.

Please note: the course will run from 9.30 to 5.30pm on Thursday 15/11/18 and 8.30 to 2.30pm on Friday 16/11/18.

Instructor: 

Associate Professor Linda Sweet is academic nurse and midwife. She has 20 years of qualitative research experience and has been providing training and consultation in the use of QSR software including NVivo for over 14 years. Her research interests include midwifery practice and health professions education, and supervisors numerous research higher degree students. Linda is also deputy editor of the international journal Women and Birth.

About this course: 

Those choosing to enrol in this course will be working on a research project of their own, and will be required to bring their work in progress to the workshop. They will be seeking to advance their knowledge and skills in higher-level data analysis, theory building, validating findings, and producing reports and accounts.

 

The course assumes basic mastery of skills in using NVivo for data management and analysis, including coding. It builds on these skills to equip users to undertake advanced data analysis, and to produce effective accounts of their research. The focus is on applying advanced tools from the NVivo tool kit to research in progress through hands-on experience.

 

When enrolling, participants will be asked to provide information about their current project, including an indication of aspects of NVivo they wish to learn more about. The final content of the Master-class will be developed in response to participants' needs and interests and will include opportunities for discussion and consulting about individual projects.

 

Note: This course will be conducted in NVivo for Windows.

 

 

Course syllabus: 

Potential content may include:

 

Part I: Advanced data analysis.

  • Critiquing coding structures.
  • Moving from descriptive coding to categorical, thematic, conceptual or theoretical coding.
  • Exploring themes and patterns using advanced Queries, Similarity Diagrams, Tree Maps, Cluster Analysis and other exploration tools.

 

Part II: Testing hypotheses and establishing credibility. 

  • Posing questions to test the strength of emerging propositions and/or conclusions drawn from data analysis.
  • Identifying ways of answering these questions using Queries and other exploration and visualisation tools in NVivo.

 

Part III: Building an account and writing your findings.

  • Establishing criteria for good reporting by critiquing reports of current research that have used NVivo.
  • Using NVivo’s tools for representing and reporting findings: mapping concepts, visualising and charting findings, generating reports, exporting material, and interfacing with other software including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel.

 

Course format: 

Participants should bring their own data or project to work with during the course.

 

This hands-on training will be conducted using a Windows platform. NVivo for Mac users will be accommodated, but the demonstrations will be given in Windows.

 

Participants will be expected to have the latest version of NVivo installed on their own device. A 14 day free trial is available through QSR International if you don't have a copy. Please don't open the trial version until just before the start of the course. Once (or if) you have NVivo installed, please check for the latest updates within the program.

 

If you are using a laptop belonging to your workplace, it will be essential that you install all your updates before attending the course, as you may not have the authorisation to install software outside of your work environment.

 

Please have Endnote installed on your pc, as using NVivo with Endnote will be demonstrated.

You will also need a copy of Micosoft Office.

Recommended Background: 

Completion of Applied Computer-assisted Qualitative Data Analysis using NVivo or equivalent tertiary course and experience with NVivo.

The ACSPRI Head Office is located at 763 Heidelberg Road, Alphington, just before the corner of Yarralea St.

 

Accommodation: 

The ACSPRI Office is only 20 minutes from the Melbourne's CBD via train. Accommodation located close to any of the City Loop train stations (Parliament, Melbourne Central, Spencer St, Flinders St and {on weekdays} Flagstaff) or other stations along the Hurstbridge Line will enable a very easy commute (see Transport below). We expect most visitors would appreciate staying quite centrally and there are numerous accommodation options. It is worth checking a travel website (expedia, tripadvisor, etc) to fine the best option for your budget and requirements, but we recommend staying close to a train station as per above.

 

Ivanhoe Quest Apartments are located 20 minutes walk east of the ACSPRI Office, along Upper Heidelberg Road.  You can also catch the train to Alphington Station from either Ivanhoe Station (2 stops - city direction) or Darebin Station (1 stop - city direction). You can also walk to Heidelberg Road (4 mins) take the 546 Bus to Yarralea Street, which is opposite our office.

 

 

Car Parking / Transport: 

Alphington Station is roughly 20 minutes from Melbourne Central (and other City loop stations) on the Hurstbridge Line and only a few minutes' walk from the ACSPRI office. There are also a number of bus lines that service the area. Bus services are very limited on weekends and the train is recommended. Click here for the journey planner.

 

By car, the quickest route for many local Melbournians will be via the Eastern Freeway and/or Chandler Hwy. From the CBD the Eastern Freeway from the Inner North will also probably be the quickest route. At that time on a weekend 20 minutes would allow plenty of time. Parking is usually available in Yarralea St or nearby but not on Heidelberg Road. 

 

Secure space is available to store bicycles at the office. The office is very close to Alphington Park, which backs onto the Yarra River and subsequently a vast network of Melbourne's bike paths.

 

 

Venue and Timetable: 

The course will run from 9.30am until 4.30pm each day (unless otherwise notified).

Breaks are usually held at 11:00 - 11:15, 12:45 - 1.15 and 2:45 - 3:00. Lunch and a small morning and afternoon tea are provided each day.
